Environmental ambassador award enhanced
04.07.08
The Environmental Ambassador award at the Business Travel World Awards 2009 is to be extended into a corporate council.

The category, introduced only last year, made such a huge impact that the judges decided to extend its life by inviting past and present winners to form a group with the aim of creating and driving best practice for corporate sustainability and reduced carbon emissions.

The award, which any entrant may win only once, was won in its inaugural year by Eurostar, whose chief executive Richard Brown will join the judging panel for the shortlist interviews in this category only.

Brown told businesstravelworld.com, “More and more business travellers and their employers are looking to reduce the environmental impact of their journeys, so the need for travel providers to help customers ‘do their bit’ is becoming ever more acute.

“At Eurostar we are seeking ways to reduce all our environmental impacts, and we are keen to create a network of similar-minded businesses so that we can share experiences, learn from each other, and make even faster progress.  We believe that reducing consumption, re-using materials wherever we can and recycling waste is not just good for the planet, it’s good for business.”

On behalf of the judges, Andrew Solum of Travel Industry Associates said: “Environment reflects the concerns of the modern world in preserving, protecting and more efficiently utilising our dwindling resources in the face of climate change, population growth and increased global demand for energy to fuel our lives. The judges believe that companies which are exploring new and innovative ways of doing business in a more environmentally efficient or alternative way are deserving of recognition for leading others down new and exciting paths which could lead to a total change in our current business methods and practices.”

The 2009 Business Travel World Awards are sponsored by Barclaycard Business, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Eurostar, Evolvi, Hotelscene, HSBC, Marriott and Qatar Airways.

The winners of the 2009 Awards will be announced at a black-tie dinner at the Grosvenor House on Monday, 19 January. Go to book a table to secure your place on the night.
